The Gender Monitoring Office would like to bring to the attention of The New Times’ readers the source of the figures published in the New Times article of 14 May, 2010 entitled "New law to protect women employees in the pipeline”.
The story stated that "according to statistics from the Gender Monitoring Office (GMO), only 14.8 percent of the female population has remunerative employment, 15.7 percent are on wages and 57 percent do not earn any income at all”.
These statistics quoted are not from GMO, but rather from the 2005 Demographic Health Survey (DHS) report.
The stated figures were jointly presented by GMO and MIFOTRA in the opening session of Participatory Gender Situational Analysis at the Ministry of Public Service and Labour.
