KIGALI - PRESIDENT Paul Kagame has said that RPF’s track record and what it has achieved in the development of every citizen is evident and speaks for itself.
He made the remarks yesterday during an interview with the media, shortly after being elected by his party, the Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF), as its 2010 presidential candidate, at the National Stadium.
Kagame said that there has been tremendous development right from the grassroots, adding that there is need to continue with the progress.
On the prospects of winning the elections, Kagame said that based on RPF’s record of the last seven years, he is confident of the victory.
"I don’t think there is a good reason for doubting that RPF, for whom I am a candidate, is going to win these elections,” he said.
"In the next seven years, we intend to consolidate the gains we have made and we are guided by our vision 2020 which encapsulates what we intend to do in social, political and economic sphere of this country.”
"Much has been done in laying the foundation in the past years ... what remains to be done is to continue rebuilding on this foundation and it has to be sustainable…it has to be coming from the people of this country and accepted by the people of this country and making a difference for them,” he said.
President Kagame singled out corruption as one of the major challenges that his government indentified and dealt with decisively, in the last seven years.
"We have identified corruption as a serious problem, that if we don’t deal with it head-on, then it will certainly undermine our efforts for development. We have seen it in the past, not only in our country, we have seen it other countries and how that undermines development. So, once you have identified that, then it is the people of this country, the leadership to make sure that not only do we talk about this being something that would undermine our development, we have got to be seen to be doing things that actually fight this kind of scourge, so that it doesn’t take root within our society,” Kagame said.
