KIGALI - THE Chairman of the Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF), and Head of State, President Paul Kagame, was yesterday elected to represent his party in the forthcoming Presidential elections slated for August 9, 2010.
Amidst loud cheers from over 30,000 party members, who had converged at Amahoro National Stadium for RPF’s national congress, Kagame was officially endorsed RPF’s 2010 presidential candidate.
In his acceptance speech, President Kagame thanked RPF members for their continued trust and support for him.
He added that he would not have taken on the responsibilities if he wasn’t confident of the support from the party members.
Kagame, pointed out that he has confidence in the people and that it was the reason he always accepted the tasks they assigned to him
He highlighted some of his party’s main goals as, good governance, economic development, security as well as improving the welfare of all the Rwandan people, emphasising that while leaders may change, the party’s goals remain the same.
The President re-affirmed his commitment to focus on the goals and called on his compatriots to work with him in achieving them.
He pointed out that Rwandans, and members of RPF in particular, have the primary responsibility to improve their own welfare and this can be achieved by focusing on developmental activities.
President Kagame stressed that Rwandans have everything it takes to move to a higher level. However, he added that, in the past bad governance and the lack of good policies had adversely affected the country’s growth.
Kagame reminded his audience that good leadership, while not easy to achieve, is possible.
Kagame went on to say that since Rwandans have worked hard to have good leaders and policies at all levels, there is no reason why they can’t achieve sustainable development.
The president emphasised that it is only the Rwandan people who can guarantee that the country will achieve its goals.
