KIGALI - As part of an ongoing city roads overhaul, one of the busiest routes during peak hours, the city centre-Sopetrade highway, will soon be upgraded with an extra track.

Trees along the upper side of the road have already been cut in preparation for this exercise which Bruno Rangira, Kigali city’s spokesperson, says is part of an ongoing wider project to rehabilitate 36 kms of roads within the city.

"This is part of a project in which 36 kms will be rehabilitated by Kigali city with funds from government availed through a loan of 30.7 million dollars from a Chinese bank, Exim,” said Rangira.

Works on several other roads around the city are near completion. The project has seen Kabeza, Nyamirambo, Kimihurura roads, and others being re-done.

Rangira said the whole project started in November last year and is scheduled to be complete by October 2011.
