Facebook is a social network. After making your account, you can post status updates to let your friends know what you’re doing, add applications and post notes to name a few of its functions.
According to Felix Rugambwa 26, a student at Kigali Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), activities on Facebook consume a lot of time yet are fun to do at the same time.
"I use Facebook and forget to do my coursework assignments; it’s really distracting,” he said.
Charity Matama 28, says that facebook delays the progress of doing their work for hours.
"Almost every college and high school student, corporate people who head very big institutions have signed up for it. Facebook has gained immense popularity in the past few years and this has led to delays in beating work deadlines,” Matama said.
Jackie Kallisa 36, believes that putting off work to spend time Facebooking means that even the smallest and simplest of tasks are drawn out to unbelievable extents.
"Facebook has no control over people. Like everything else that people blame for their procrastination, it does not force itself onto a person. One can easily turn off their Internet connection and do their work without the distractions of Facebook. But some people lack the self-control to do this and instead blame a website,” Kalisa said
More so, 19-year-old Hakim Kamanzi, a S.5 student at Lycee de Kigali Secondary School has become so addicted to Facebook.
"Facebook is so addictive that it has definitely interfered with my school work. I spend most of my time updating my status and checking if someone has written on my girlfriend’s wall, I will go and check those people out,” Kamanzi said.
Facebook wastes all people’s time but it doesn’t have to be that way. The debate however, can continue on whether to Facebook or not to.
