The Gender Monitoring Office (GMO) is set to carry out a gender evaluation in major institutions in the country on their compliance in promoting the fundamental principles of gender that aim to bolster equality among the sexes.

This was revealed tuesday during a consultative meeting on the harmonization of gender auditing activities between GMO and its stakeholders.

"We are carrying out research based on gender statistics on specific issues such as employment in the government, private sectors, NGOs, religious bodies and other civil society organs, so that we can improve gender mainstreaming in our country,” Murangwa Vincent, a Gender Expert in GMO.

He explained that the exercise was aimed at helping various institutions identify gender gaps and challenges to their programs and practices meant to promote gender equality so that they can solve them.

"Our role is to provide advice and recommendations to the public, private, NGOs and religious institutions to put in place strategies that address internal gender inequalities” Murangwa added.

Umubyeyi Christine, a legal advisor in the National Commission for Human Rights, emphasized the need to coordinate and harmonize gender auditing and analysis so that balanced and matching results can be attained to make planning and budgeting easy.

"GMO should work hand-in-hand with the National Bureau of Statistics so that their reports on gender do not overlap. This will assist the government and other institutions to plan better in their bid to improve gender equality,” Umubyeyi told the stakeholders.
