THE men’s national rugby team- the Silverbacks have started non residential training in preparation for the Carcassonne 7s tournament slated for June 22 – 26 in France.

Rwanda landed the invitation after a rewarding display in last month’s Hong Kong Kwoloo 10s.

For now, Silverbacks caretaker coach Gerald Nsenga has tabled two sessions every week at Rugunga grounds.

"We are starting with two sessions every week and then step up to daily sessions from mid-June.”

2010 is turning out to be a very fruitful year for local rugby. On top of the Kwoloo 10s and a possible trip to France, Rwanda has been tipped to become a full member of the IRB (International Rugby Board) in the next few years.

According to the body’s development officer in charge of African countries, Jean Luc Barthez, who summed up a three-day tour on Sunday, the country is on the right track.

Rwanda is an affiliate member and has been since 2004 when she was officially integrated into the Confederation of African Rugby (CAR).

Meanwhile, the 2010 league rolls off May 22 with ten clubs in contention. These include reigning champions Buffaloes, Lion de Fer, UNR Grizzlies, Sharks, Simba, Puma, Kaduha tigers, Marines, Gorillas and ISAE.
