Officials from the Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) over the weekend donated iron sheets to residents of Rubavu District in the Western Province as part of efforts to provide shelter to residents who were affected by recent landslides.

The 1400 iron sheets meant to benefit 30 families were donated at the launch of activities to mark the Taxpayer’s Day which will be celebrated next month.

RRA Commissioner General, Mary Baine, said that this was part of the tax body’s social corporate responsibility.
"We decided to launch this day here in Rubavu district and to stand together with the people who were affected by the disaster by doing community work, and sensitizing them to avoid smuggling,” Baine said

Addressing the masses that turned up for the event, Western Province Governor, Celestin Kabahizi, lauded RRA’s initiative of taking the celebrations to Rubavu and supporting those devastated by the landslides.

Finance Minister, John Rwangombwa, urged Rubavu residents to desist from smuggling and requested them to abide by the law and consequently play their role in the country’s development.

"We came here to stand by the people who were affected by the disaster and also ask you be part of the country’s development process through paying your taxes properly and on time,” Rwangombwa said.

According to Rwangombwa, taxes that are collected always trickle back to the community directly through various projects, especially the much-needed infrastructural development.
