RUSIZI – Authorities in Rusizi district say cases of domestic violence are on the rise.

The news comes after it was reported in Nzahaha sector that a man committed suicide after a domestic quarrel with his wife over a basket of sweet potatoes.

In the same sector, last week a man murdered his wife after a domestic quarrel. In Bugarama, an orphaned teenager reportedly committed suicide two weeks ago under unclear circumstances.

The District Police commander Superintendent, John Sesonga, said suicide cases were partly caused by family neglect.

Reacting to the reports, the Rusizi district Mayor, Fabien Sindayiheba cautioned residents against domestic violence.

"It is everyone’s responsibility to look out for each other rather than trying to offer support after grief has hit a given family,” advised Sindayiheba.

The Mayor urged residents to work together with the local authorities to stem such forms of crimes.
