RUHANGO – Police and traders in Ruhango district have embarked on war against polythene bags as a way of protecting the environment.
The programme was launched as part of the Police environmental week activities last week.
Police officers embarked on a door- to –door campaign searching for polythene bags in shops, markets and homes. At least three bags of polythene bags were recovered, according to the District Police commander, Supt Fred Simugaya.
Supt. Simugaya said, "The operation was good, aimed at educating residents on the importance of protecting the environment for sustainable development.”
Sosthene Ndamyuwera, the private sector representative noted that residents are aware of the dangers of polythene bags to the environment and there has been a massive mobilization to educate them on the law on environmental protection.
He said: "Residents have become responsible on environmental issues. The only existing polythene bags are found in factory packed goods. However, there is a program of gathering such bags to be safely disposed of after goods are sold.”
