KIGALI - In an event scheduled for this Saturday, the Social Democratic Party (PSD) is expected to convene a general assembly to elect their presidential candidate for the forthcoming presidential elections.

PSD, a member of the consultative forum of political parties, announced its intentions to field a candidate for the August 9 elections during its Political Bureau meeting yesterday.

"We will hold a general assembly on Saturday where we will elect a candidate who will vie for presidency,” said Jean Damascene Ntawukuriryayo the Deputy Speaker of Parliament.

"The party is ready and highly represented at all levels of administration from the village level to the topmost.”
This is will be the first time PSD fields a presidential candidate since 1994.

In 2003 PSD and other political parties formed a coalition that backed President Paul Kagame, who was the flag bearer for the Rwanda Patriotic Front.

Just last month, the Liberal Party (PL) which was also part of the coalition, declared its intention to front their own candidate for the August polls.

Ntawukuriryayo, who is the Secretary General of PSD said that during the Saturday meeting, a new executive committee will be elected.

The current executive committee has served for five years.
