KARONGI — Local leaders from the Western Province last week joined students of Kigali Health Institute (KHI), Nyamishaba campus located in Karongi district for  a one-week commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

At the closure of the mourning period, a traditional ‘walk to remember’ preceded laying wreaths on the mass grave located near the institute.

The commemoration week was organized by the Association of Student Genocide Survivors (AERG). The students were reminded that remembering the Genocide was meant to offer them lessons to ensure that such a tragedy never happens again.

"Ancient Rwandans lived in harmony as one people but the loss of unity as a result of colonialism is what led to the Genocide. Without unity, anything bad can happen again,” Yves Bernard Ningabire, the Executive Secretary of Karongi district told the students.

He hailed the students for the cooperation among themselves.

The coordinator of the Nyamishaba campus, Jonas Rugema, encouraged the students to avoid divisionism and desist from genocide ideology.

Also present were students from the Institute of Agriculture, Technology and Education (UNATEK) and Kigali Independent University (ULK).
