RWAMAGANA —  Access Bank Rwanda staff over the weekend donated food among other items worth over Rwf 3.5 million to Ruhunda genocide orphans in Gishari sector, Rwamagana district. 

Talking to The New Times, the Access Bank Managing Director Jean Claude Karayenzi, said that the donation formed part of the bank’s social responsibility programmes. 

"The beneficiaries are also part of the larger society. We will always do whatever we can, to offer more support to these children in different spheres.”  Addressing the children, Karayenzi, urged them to always aim higher and stay focused if they are to realize a bright future.

The three orphanages have over 60 child headed homes.  The bank’s staff later visited Ruhunda genocide memorial site to pay respect  to genocide victims who lost their lives in the area. 

Diane Nyinawingeri, one of the orphans reflected on the history of genocide in Ruhunda and neighbouring villages. She said that almost all Tutsi who had taken refuge in the area were killed. 

Nyinawingeri however, said they were optimistic of a bright future. "The children you see here were under 3 years on average during the genocide. There were practically no survivors…,” she said.
