KIGALI / NYABUGOGO - PRESIDENT Paul Kagame yesterday thanked members of the various cooperatives for joining efforts to uplift themselves from poverty, a move that has significantly contributed to the country’s growth.

He made these remarks during a visit to cooperatives located in Nyabugogo, Kigali City.

Addressing the gathering, President Kagame noted that good policies are those that build the nation, promote good livelihoods and foster development adding that these are the policies in place that will drive Rwanda to prosperity.

The President said that the past policies of divisionism stunted the country’s growth and as a result, Rwanda is poor and still lags behind.

Kagame therefore urged citizens not to wait for the future but act now and play their role in nation building in a bid to accelerate national development.

In relation to recent grenade attacks, the Head of State said that individuals behind such plans are merciless and only seek to disturb the peace.

He however emphasized that the government will do whatever it takes to deal with anything that stands in the way of the country’s development.

Kagame also challenged Rwandans to have the courage to fight for their rights, peace, security and democracy, adding that the problems can only be solved by Rwandans because everything that has been achieved so far has happened as a result of their concerted efforts.

With reference to organisations such as Human Rights Watch or newspapers like Umuseso, the President told the Rwandan people that they should not allow themselves to be defined by such groupings..

He added that some of these organizations do so because they are used to undermine Africans. Kagame urged Rwandans to always make their own decisions and choose what is best for them.

As the country prepares for the Presidential elections due to take place in August, Kagame called upon all Rwandans to exercise their rights and elect a leader of their choice who will steer the nation in the right direction.

While emphasizing the need for right policies that guarantee peace, security and development, the President also said that accountability is still key as it guarantees that elected leaders — right from the President to the local levels — play their part.

The citizens were given opportunity to air out their views and ask questions and the issues raised were resolved in the meeting.
