Kigali City Mayor, Dr Aisa Kirabo Kacyira yesterday officially inaugurated construction works on several city roads stretching up to six kilometers which will be constructed at a cost of Rwf 2 billion.  

The funds were jointly provided by central government through the Ministry of Infrastructure and Kigali city.

The roads to be covered are Rwandex – Kicukiro centre via Zion Temple Church, in Kicukiro district, Chez Lando – Croix du Sud Hospital commonly known as Kwa Nyirinkwaya in Remera and Gakinjiro – FAWE Girls road, both in Gasabo district.

Others are Stipp Hotel to the main road in Kiyovu and Nyabugogo -Muhima road which will stretch up to Kinamba, both in Nyarugenge district.

Works are expected to be completed by December this year and have been contracted to Horizon Construction Company, a local company which charged about Rwf 280m per kilometer as opposed to Rwf 500 million charged by international firms. 

At an event held at Zion Temple Church in Rwandex, Kicukiro District, Kirabo appealed to residents who live near these roads to create water channels so as not to destroy the roads.

"Most of the tarmac roads are destroyed by running water. Those who live near these roads should therefore look for ways of channeling these waters and devise ways of preventing soil erosion by the roadsides,” Kirabo said.

This brings the whole roads now under construction in the city to 42 kilometers following the 36km that stretch were launched last year which include Nyamirambo and Kanombe roads.
