The 2022 Zone 5 senior Beach Volleyball tournament is underway in Bujumbura, Burundi, returning to action for the first time since 2019 due to covid-19 interruptions.
The tournament kicked off Wednesday, December 21 and will run until Saturday, December 24.
The likes of Uganda, Kenya, Burundi and Tanzania will be represented in the tournament, both men and women, but Rwanda won’t be represented for unknown reasons.
The men’s tournament attracted teams from four countries namely Uganda, Burundi, Kenya and Egypt.
In women 's category, Burundi has the highest representation with four teams, two from Egypt while Kenya and Uganda are each represented by one team.
It is the first Zone 5 volleyball competition since Rwandan Fernand Ruterana was elected president of the Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB) Zone V in October 2020.
"we are excited that regional volleyball competitions are back as teams continue to return to the new normal after the pandemic,” Ruterana said.
The champions in each of men and women categories will be rewarded a USD500 cash prize while the first and second runners-up will take home USD300 and USD200.
The regional tournament will also see the winners score points that will help them improve on the FIVB Beach Volleyball rankings.
