KARONGI – Police in Karongi district on Tuesday joined residents to dig terraces and trenches to help contain fast running water which normally causes soil erosion in the area during the rainy season.

This was during the launch of the Police’s environmental week which is part of activities to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Rwanda National Police.

Other local leaders led by Dative Simb Mukabalisa, the district vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs, joined in the community work.

Addressing residents shortly after the exercise, Mukabalisa explained that environmental protection helps to prevent natural hazards such as drought.

"As much as environmental protection helps to raise the agricultural yields of farmers, it also helps to prevent natural hazards which result from bad weather,” Mukabalisa said.

Supt. Alex Rutabayiro, the Karongi District Police commander, told residents that such social activities to help the local community would continue.
