MUSANZE – The newly elected Musanze district Mayor, Winifrida Mpembyemungu, has vowed to build a team spirit among staff as one of her top priorities.

Mpembyemungu, 44, formerly district’s vice Mayor in charge of Economic Affairs was elected last week as the new Mayor, replacing Célestin Karabayinga who was sacked along with his former District Executive Secretary, Oswald Habiyaremye   over alleged mismanagement.

Also elected was Mpembyemungu’s deputy in charge of Economic Affairs, Jérôme Mugenze, formerly working as the district youth coordinator.

Speaking to The New Times, Mpembyemungu said, that the lack of cooperation and team spirit among the leaders was responsible for the decline in the district’s performance.

"I’m optimistic that we shall build a strong team spirit which will ultimately enable us to close the gap between leaders and residents. By so doing we expect everyone to produce better results,’’ she said.

Mpembyemungu also said that 253 district leaders including sector and cell executive secretaries had signed performance contracts and will be accountable for all their activities.

She added that the new administration will embark on agriculture intensification programme through land consolidation.
