FORMER Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (Cecafa) head Dennis Obua passed away yesterday in Kampala.

The Ugandan, who headed the body between 2003 and 2007, was expected to grace this year’s Kagame Cup which kicks off next Saturday in Kigali.

"The regional body mourns with the family of Obua, Fufa and the people of Uganda during this difficult time,” Cecafa Secretary General Nicholas Musonye said.

He had also been nominated by Cecafa to attend a special dinner at this year’s FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
"He will be greatly missed by the Cecafa family,” Cecafa Chairman Leodegar Tenga said.

Between 1960 and 1980, Obua played for Uganda’s Police FC and the national side- Uganda Cranes.

After hanging his boots, Obua rose through the ranks to become FUFA (Federation of Uganda Football Association) chairman in 1998. After serving two terms, he went a notch higher by becoming Cecafa president in 2003.

At the end of his four-year term, he was made Cecafa Honorary chairman during the body’s General Assembly in Dar es Salaam.

One of Obua’s sons David Obua is an integral member of the Uganda Cranes and Scottish Premier League club Hearts.
