RWAMAGANA - Police in Rwamagana has started anti-crime clubs in various schools as part of its efforts to fight crime. During the launch on Sunday, an eight-member executive committee was elected to steer the activities of the clubs.

The Rwamagana District Police commander, Vincent Kamanzi, who was part of the launch at the Islamic College in Rwamagana, said that the whole idea was to involve as many people as possible in crime prevention.

He added that choosing the Islamic school for the kick-off was not accidental, since it is located in an environment that has a bad crime record.

The school’s head teacher, Abdulkalim Uwizeyimana, welcomed the initiative, saying that it would be beneficial to the school’s general discipline. 

He said that the students elected on the committee, will be exemplary in enforcing discipline in the school.

"The club is a blessing; apart from assisting the police to reduce crime in the society, it will also model the students,” he said.

Bernadette Nyirankusi, the chairperson of the club promised to cooperate with the police through information sharing, adding that fighting drug abuse would be her priority.

"I will set up mechanisms to net drug abusers and alcoholics because such crimes lead to rape and abuse of the girl child,” she said.

The creation of anti- crime clubs in the schools is part of the initiatives of the Community Policing Committees in the country.
