The national police, will on Tuesday May 4, launch an Environmental Protection Week, as part of the ongoing celebrations to mark the 10th anniversary of the Force, that started two weeks ago.

The event to be launched in Rwisirabo sector, Kayonza district in Eastern Province will see a number of trees planted in different parts of the country through communal work, Umuganda.

Police spokesperson, Eric Kayiranga said that as part of the environmental week, fire fighting techniques will be set up around Akagera National Park in Kayonza and Nyungwe forest in the Western province.

"As part of reducing risks, we will create fire breaks such as trenches surrounding these two national parks as a fire fighting method,” Kayiranga said.

Fire has been one of the hazards to the national parks and forests in the country, with the most recent fire outbreak in Akagera that lasted about 38 hours gutting close to 107 square kilometers.

Other activities expected during the course of the week include creating terraces in the Western and Northern Provinces and fighting water hyacinth in all the 27 lakes in the country.
