KIGALI - RECO-RWASCO Friday finished repairing of the broken water pipe in Nyabugogo, through which almost a quarter of the water supplied to Kigali City is channelled.
RECO & RWASCO is the Rwanda Electricity Corporation & Rwanda Water and Sanitation Corporation.

The damage to the pipe had caused a severe shortage of water in very many parts of Kigali such as Kicukiro, Gisozi, Remera, Rwampara, Mburabuturo, Kinyinya and Nyabarongo.

As an alternative, the Gisozi water pump which is only opened in times of emergencies temporarily served the affected.

"We can proudly say that the problem has now been resolved. Rwandans can now receive normal water supply. We have also disinfected and cleaned the tributary pipes so that people can access clean water,” Jean Pierre Nkeramihigo, the Water Operations and Production Manager, said in an interview.

Nkeramihigo said that the pipe had been repaired and its route had been successfully diverted from the high pressure zone to a low pressure zone so that it is not damaged again in future.

"People who were evicted from the pipe’s designated route were compensated and they also cooperated with us to see that we complete this job fast,” he added.

At Gisozi, one of the places that had been affected by water shortage, villagers were excited to see water flowing again.

"We haven’t had water for almost a month now. We had to go very long distances to get some water, and in some instances, we wouldn’t be able to get any. That is why I am very glad to see the taps running again,” Fabien
