Twenty four officers from the Rwanda National Police on Thursday completed a two-week course on ‘Internal Audit Techniques’

The officers, who will now be auditing various police departments, were equipped with knowledge in audit planning, audit of internal control systems, cash and cheque payments.

Other topics covered in the course include internal audit of human resources, customer services, information technology, income taxes and auditing reports.

"We do all this to maximize the efficiency of the national police, but to achieve this, you need to utilize this knowledge you acquired here to avoid mistakes,” Chief Supt. Elisa Kabera, the Director of Inspectorate of Police said.

He commended those who supported the training; the International Criminal Investigative Training Assistance Programme (ICITAP), and the financiers, Millennium Challenge Corporation through USAID, for their commitment to support the police in capacity building.

Rick Danielle from USAID commended the police’s commitment to become a strong institution by accomplishing its targets.

"There is nothing important in police agencies than being internally strong,” he said.

Two of the trained officers, Innocent Katabarwa and Jack Ngarukiye, were given medals of the United States Department of Justice for their outstanding performance in the course, even when they had no prior auditing knowledge and joined the course a bit late.

The training is the first of its kind in the National Police force.
