Police constable Emmanuel Ntiyongoma, who shot dead a hawker on Monday evening in Nyabugogo, a commercial Kigali City suburb has been put behind bars.

"He was has been detained to enable effective investigations,” Police Spokesman, Inspector Willy Marcel Higiro said on Thursday.

Higiro said that Ntiyongoma is detained at Muhima Prison Station.

"We are also working on his file.”
Ntiyongoma killed Mathias Hategekimana after he had fired twice at a group of hawkers whose business is considered illegal on Kigali streets.

Eyewitnesses said that the killer and three other policemen disembarked from a police patrol car, and started chasing hawkers, who in return started hurling stones at the plain-clothed cops.

The stone-hurling hawkers, eyewitnesses said, prompted Ntiyongoma to shoot at them using a pistol, killing Hategekimana, who is said to have been in his early 20s.
The killer and his colleagues drove off immediately after the incident.
