While some people might have thought that Rwanda wasn’t self sufficient in food, the World Food Programme may have proved otherwise.
According to yesterday’s story in The New Times, the WFP, in collaboration with the Japanese government, has launched a US$1million ‘Purchase for progress’ programme in Gatsibo district, Eastern province.
This programme will purchase local farmers’ produce that will be used to feed refugees in and outside the country.
The programme, which was officially launched in Kabarore sector by the WFP country director, Abdoulaye Balde, and the acting Japanese Ambassador to Rwanda, Kunio Hatanaka, begun with the purchase of 400 tonnes of maize from the Maize Promotion Cooperative Union of Gatsibo.
The mere fact that we can sell so many tonnes of maize shows that our farmers are producing more food than the local market can consume. Therefore, I urge them to produce food for export.
