KARONGI – A total of 59,700 mosquito nets were this week distributed to children below 5 years in the districts of Rutsiro and Karongi. The donation is part of the ongoing activities to commemorate the Rwanda National Police 10th anniversary.
Supt. Alex Rutabayiro, the Karongi District Police commander, said that apart from ensuring security of the population, it’s also part of their job to promote good health of Rwandans.
"We are working with the Ministry of Health to reduce child deaths through prevention of malaria which has been identified as the major cause of infant and maternal mortality rate,” Rutabayiro said shortly after distributing the mosquito nets.
He emphasized the need for the local residents to cooperate with various security organs in order to ensure security. Pierre Nsabimana, a father of two children who was given nets could not hide his excitement while speaking to The New Times.
"Medical expenses will certainly reduce because malaria will no longer be a problem to my family,” he said.
