GICUMBI – The Executive Secretary of the Northern Province, Deo Kabagamba, on Wednesday urged for closer relations between community policing personnel and other security organs in Gicumbi district.

Kabagamba made the call at Gicumbi stadium while opening a two days training of community policing personnel drawn from the sectors of Byumba, Kageyo, Mutete, Miyove and Nyankenke.

"Security is the backbone of all socio-economic activities countrywide, which is why each of us should be security conscious at all times,” he said.

The training was organised by the Rwanda National Police, as part of efforts to strengthen Police-community partnership in crime prevention.

A senior officer within the police force Cyprien Gatete, who represented the Police Commissioner General at the function, called on the participants to fight the sale and trafficking of illicit alcoholic drinks locally known as ‘Kanyanga.’

"Consumption of Kanyanga is harmful to one’s health and is the root cause of most domestic violent crimes among residents,” said Gatete.

The district Mayor, Bonane Nyangezi, cautioned residents present against listening to ‘negative elements’ bent on spreading harmful propaganda, aimed at disrupting the August Presidential elections.
