The Paralympics games for the Kigali jubilee cup started with Imena slamming THT in the males’ standing volleyball opening match at NPC’s new gymnasium at Amahoro premises on Sunday.
Imena, Intwari, Gorillas, THT, Masaka-Goalball team, Kanombe-wheelchair rugby team and ACPJ Neauv are competing in standing volleyball, sitting volleyball, seat ball, Wheelchair rugby and Athletics for the cup marking 100 years of the existence of Kigali city.
According to Celestine Nzeyimana, NPC Secretary General, the competition has been entirely organized by Kigali city through its Association of Kigali Women in Sports (AKWOS) and that they are taking the opportunity to include female teams in rural areas as a campaign to step up their participation in competitions.
"We are glad to see females participating. In fact, we are planning to start a ladies’ national championship after this competition,” said Nzeyimana adding that through AKWOS, many Paralympics ladies’ teams will have more chances of progressing.
Four ladies’ teams are competing in seat ball while seven male teams are competing in all games.
The two first teams in each game will, according to Nzeyimana, play final matches to win the jubilee title.
Intwari is in the lead after a 3-0 set victory over Gorillas in standing volleyball while Gorillas also earned their sweet revenge after a 38-14 win over Intwari in seat ball.
