GICUMBI – The turn out of mothers for children’s vaccination during the ongoing Mother and Child Health week has remained high at different immunization sites in Byumba sector.

Part of the huge turnout is attributed to an incentive that was tied to the programme. On Wednesday, mothers who visited Gacurabwenge, Nyamabuye, Gisuna and Nyarutarama sites were also given mosquito nets.

The Director of Byumba Health Center, Papias Iyakaremye, said apart from giving mosquito nets to mothers, children aged six months to 5 years were being given vitamin A tablets.

"Pregnant mothers are vaccinated against tetanus and given water purification syrup in addition to iron tablets, while mothers who have recently delivered are given de-worming and vitamin A tablets,” said Iyakaremye.

This program is also being carried out in primary and secondary schools for children less than 16 years, according to Iyakaremye.
