PARLIAMENT - Members of both Chambers of Parliament and United Nations agencies will today begin a two-day meeting where they will be updated on the current status of the agricultural sector.

The meeting, which is expected to attract 150 stakeholders, will provide an insight into the current agricultural situation and strategies for its development.

According to the Parliamentary Director of Information and Outreach, Augustin Habimana,  the meeting will, among other things, work towards providing lasting solutions for food security in the country.

"Obviously, our economy is mainly based on agriculture, so what the parliamentarians and other stakeholders are trying to do, is find ways to further develop this sector, to enable it to sustain the food security of the nation while it also contributes financially to the economy,” he said.

Habimana explained that the MP were executing one of their duties, which is to control government activities and advise where necessary.

The Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, John Rwangombwa will make a presentation on the objectives of the agriculture sector in the EDPRS and the progress towards their implementation.

Agriculture Minister, Dr. Agnes Kalibata, will also update the participants on the status of food security in Rwanda while the Deputy Speaker of Parliament; Jean Damascene Ntawukuriryayo will talk about the impact of population growth on the achievement of EDPRS goals.
