16 after the 1994 Genocide against Tutsis, members of the media need to look forward and find ways to further develop the industry, the Minister in charge of Cabinet Affairs, Protais Musoni, has said

He was addressing a cross section of members of the media, ahead of the International Media Freedom day.

"We need to look back and see what happened, and look at what is being done now as we move forward and find ways to further develop our media industry,” he noted.

Musoni acknowledged the issue of print media which is still lagging behind compared to other mediums.

"The print media is still read by very few, meaning that the government is looking to increase access to this kind of media to the masses,” he said 

The Director General in the Ministry of Information, Ignatius Kabagambe, talked about the theme for this year’s theme - The right to know.

"I think the theme should be "the right to know the truth”, because while our audience needs to know, it has the right to know the truth. When you are practicing journalism that is not based on truth, and then you aren’t doing journalism,” Kabagambe said.

He updated the journalists on the course of events to mark the week dedicated to journalism where activities will include a visit to the memorial site and several live shows on both radio and television. The national celebrations will be held in Kabgayi.
