RWAMAGANA/RUBAVU – Hundreds of people mainly youth sat for the written driving license test in Rwamagana and Rubavu districts on Monday. 

The sealed exam box in Rwamagana was opened officially by police officers, before a crowd of anxious residents at 10.00 am. 

According to the concerned officers, over 3,000 candidates in Rwamagana sat for the test at an open ground.

"We wanted an ideal place which would offer a relatively good environment. The playground was the most ideal place available,” said a police officer. 

Richard Rutinduka, 45, one of the residents said that they had high hopes of getting the permit.  

Juliana Mukamisha, 16, one of the youngest candidates, said that she was ready to do all she could to get a driving license. 

I was motivated by the fact that my father was a driver, who went through a lot of unsuccessful attempts before getting a driving license, she said.  

Meanwhile, in Rubavu district, more than 3,400 persons converged at Umuganda stadium for the exams.

Those who spoke to The New Times could not hide their joy.

"I am happy that government now has acknowledged that driving permit has a certain value unlike before when it looked like a privilege,” Grace Umubyeyi said.

Superintendent Gilbert Ruhorahoza, the District Police commander, said that the exercise was successful since there were no anomalies reported.

"The exam was successful. The turn up was high and our men did a great job of supervising those who turned up,” he said.
