Following the conclusion of the road safety week, the National Police today launched the community policing week in Muhanga district, Southern district, as part of the institution’s 10th anniversary celebrations. 

Speaking to The New Times, Assistant Commissioner of police, Emmanuel Butera, in charge of community policing, said that the week will mainly focus on crime prevention.

"Through partnership with community policing committees and the residents, we want to lay strategies on how to effectively prevent crime,” Butera said.

He revealed that talk shows, billboards, sensitization seminars, car stickers and banners are some of the ways used to deliver the message.

Butera highlighted that drunkenness and domestic disputes are some of the common causes of crime in communities. 
 "Through community policing we want to change this,” he said.

Other activities to be held in the course of the week are crime prevention discussions which will focus particularly on combating drug abuse, trafficking and corruption. 

The national police celebrations will last eight weeks under the theme, "Celebrating 10 years of dynamic policing, serving the community with integrity,”
Achievements registered by the force will be highlighted during the celebrations.
