KAYONZA/RWAMAGANA —  Fish prices in various markets in Kayonza and Rwamagana districts have gone down, according to a mini survey done by The New Times.

The price of the highly demanded small Tilapia fish from Lake Muhazi costs Rwf 1000 per Kg down from Rwf 1400 a few months ago.

Traders attribute the price decline to abundant supply.
Richard Niyonshuti, a fisherman, said that the price fall in this season is higher compared to previous years.

"Another reason for the higher supply is the increase in the number of fishing boats operating in the lake. This is not a good season for us, as we suffer losses,” said the fisherman.

Fish vendors however, said that price decrease do not affect their business, since they increase or decrease prices depending on purchase prices at the lake.

"I can’t simply believe that Tilapia is available at Rwf 1000 a kg,” a proud resident said. Fish, had literally become out of reach of the common man due to prohibitive market prices.
