MUHANGA — The umbrella organisation of genocide survivors (Ibuka) has urged students of the Catholic Institute of Kabgayi (ICK) to document testimonies and facts about the killings that took place in the Catholic strong hold of Kabgayi.

Eugene Karangwa, the Ibuka-Muhanga president made the call during the commemoration vigil held at the institute’s premises on Saturday.

Karangwa observed that the genocide was promoted by the local elite and it is the same group, especially those belonging to the clergy who should strengthen the fight against its reoccurrence.

"There is need to have the elite contribute to the fight against genocide and educate the community to avoid genocide ideology through various forms of intervention,” he said.

During the event, Bishop Smargade Mbonyintege of Kabgayi distributed  candles to 16 students in memory of genocide victims.

The rector of ICK Vincent Kagabo, promised full support to the association of student survivors and asked students to be at the fore front in the the fight against genocide by educating the community.
