Editor,

The world superpowers stood aloof when Interhamwe militias descended on innocent Rwandans in 1994; and even when it became evident that the genocidal regime of Juvénal Habyarimana was determined to eliminate all Tutsis, the world continued to be indifferent.

These countries failed to respond to the atrocities that were taking place in Rwanda, despite repeated warnings from individuals like Gen. Romeo Dallaire.

The world must apologise for betraying Rwandans and never mind that it’s now sixteen years after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The international community should take a leaf from Canada’s Governor General, Michaelle Jean, who on Wednesday apologized on behalf of her government for the indifference and inaction of the international community in the lead up to, and during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
