KAMONYI – The Ministry of Justice has asked mediators commonly known as ‘Abunzi’ to always expedite justice in a timely manner in order to increase the number of locally resolved disputes.

Jacqueline Bakamurera, the deputy Attorney General made the remarks while opening a week-long training of mediators which kicked off in Kamonyi district on Wednesday.

Bakamurera said, "Mediators have resolved 85% of the disputes handled countrywide. But there is a need to increase on the performance by presenting the court resolutions on time while striving to reconcile involved parties appropriately.”

The trainees cited the lack of facilitation as one of their challenges, and appealed to the ministry for support.
The group also complained that the offer of transport through provision of bicycles meant to ease their mobility is yet to be honoured.

The workshop is scheduled to end on May 14. Over 8,000 mediators in the southern province are expected to undergo a similar training in each of the eight districts in the province.

The mediators are receiving a refresher course on mediation guidelines.
