NYAMASHEKE – Police officials in Nyamasheke district on Monday gathered in Bushekere sector, a place where accidents are said to be more rampant to argue for respect of road safety rules.

The accidents in Bushekere are blamed on foreign drivers who are not used to this particular road terrain, which is winding and pedestrians who ignore walking on pavements, according to police. 

The District Police Commander, Supt. Jean Marie Vianney Rurangirwa, called on local residents to always work hand in hand with police not only to stop accidents, but also to fight crime. 

"After 10 years, the Police have taken a very huge step towards development, we urge you to work with us closely,” said Rurangirwa. 

The district Mayor, Jean Baptiste Habyarimana urged drivers to always drive cautiously.

"Accidents have claimed our beloved ones. We should avoid reckless driving, drunk driving and talking on the phone while driving. Pedestrians should also observe use of sidewalks,” he said.
