The National ID project has set May 2 to 28 as dates for the new phase for the massive registration for the National Identity cards and to update the voter’s registers in preparation for the forthcoming presidential elections in August.

Speaking to The New Times yesterday, the National ID Coordinator, Pascal Nyamurinda, said that the registration exercise expected to register 900,000 people.

"We are planning another massive registration for the ID, but it will also help us to update the national voters register and according to our statistics, we are targeting over 900,000 people,” said Nyamurinda.

"We expect to add over 350,000 people onto the voters register because the remaining number, according to our database, is for those who have just turned 16 years”.

Nyamurinda said that the exercise will be held at the sector level where two computers will be stationed and that every district will be accorded two days to register their residents.

"We believe that two days in every district will be enough since the number of people registering is small,” he added.
The official called upon the people to utilize the period and register because this time round, the voters’ cards will bear a photo of the holder unlike the previous ones.
