RWANDA’s female junior basketball team has secured a wild card to this year’s Fiba-Africa junior championships scheduled for July 29 –August 6 in Cairo, Egypt.

The team, which has been training at Amahoro Indoor stadium under the tutelage of senior national coach Vaceslav Kavedzija, received the good news yesterday.

The Zone 5 championship and a qualifier for the continental tournament which was supposed to throw off next Tuesday in Nairobi, was called off following little interest from member countries.

Innocent Karuhije, a senior official in the national basketball federation (Ferwaba) yesterday said, "Rwanda and Kenya were the only sides who had confirmed participation prompting the Zone to call off the event.”

Meanwhile, the boys’ Fiba-Africa junior championship will run from September 14-24 in Kigali.
