MUHANGA – The Mayor of Muhanga district has asked residents to cooperate with police to eliminate activities that have tainted the image of the district.

Yvonne Mutakwasuku, said cases of increased gender based violence, deforestation, and illegal brick making have to be eliminated in order to restore the good image of the district.

"The district has been recognised for its development efforts and it’s the responsibility of residents to cooperate with police by giving information in order to curb such criminal activities,” she said.

Mutakwasuku was addressing hundreds of residents on Monday during a colourful launch of the Police Week in Muhanga.

The function was attended by hundreds of residents, various district officials and transport companies.

Residents joined members of the police force for an 8km march through Gitarama town, aimed at raising awareness on road safety measures. The march also highlighted achievements of the community policing and those of the police force generally.

The district police commander, Supt. Désiré Tuyizere, said that the RNP achievements are attributed to the continued cooperation of residents with the concerned security organs.

He called on transporters to avoid drunk driving and recklessness in order to protect the lives of road users.

Samuel Hatangimana, the Atraco Taxi operators’ boss, lauded the police for the collaboration in maintaining road safety especially through educating drivers and passengers.

He promised to mobilise drivers to uphold the road safety measures and promote discipline among transport service providers.
