Members of the Rwandan Diaspora living in Houston –Texas together with American friends of Rwanda joined the rest of the world in commemorating the 16th anniversary of the Genocide against Tutsi.

The commemoration that was jointly organized by Rwanda’s Honorary Consul in Houston, Rwandan Diaspora living in the city, and Jewish community of Houston was held at the Holocaust Museum.

Michael Rukata, the First Counselor at the Rwandan Embassy in the US, thanked the organizers of the event and called upon members present to play their role in overcoming trauma which still haunts the Genocide survivors 16 years on.

"Trauma healing is a process that needs long-term support, there is, therefore, a need to assist the victims to heal from their past experience, so as to avoid a crossover of this syndrome to another generation,” Rukata said.

"The tyrants who ruled Rwanda before and during the Genocide never attached Human Rights especially those of ‘right to life’ as a priority, the Government of Rwanda today will never ever let any seed of Genocide to grow,’’ he added.

The Honorary Consul General in Houston, Ambassador Cynthia Perry, commended President Paul Kagame for positioning Rwanda where it is today, in terms of new and fast development in all sectors of life.

The event was characterized by prayers, viewing of the documentary ‘Ghost of Rwanda’ and testimonies from Genocide survivors.
