HUYE – Residents of Simbi Sector, Huye district have called on local authorities to refurbish a Genocide memorial site in the area; where over 18,000 victims of the 1994 Genocide are buried.

The call was made on Sunday during ceremonies to accord decent reburial to the remains of 13 victims exhumed from different areas in the Sector.

"The state of this memorial site is shocking to say the least, it is leaking; the remains buried inside risk being destroyed over time unless urgent action  is taken,” said Judith Utamuliza, the representative of survivors in the Sector.

Addressing mourners, Francois Uhagaze, the district Mayor pledged the district’s commitment to mobilize funds to rehabilitate the memorial site.

"We are going to make sure that the memorial site is rehabilitated as soon as possible,” the Mayor told mourners.

He called upon residents with information as regards the whereabouts of remains of Genocide victims to share it with local authorities so that they can be exhumed and accorded a decent reburial.

Survivors in the Sector appreciated the contribution of Gacaca courts, saying it was vital in revealing the truth about the genocide.
