Plans are in advanced stages to equip the National Police of Rwanda with sniffer dogs to add to the 12 that are currently available. According to Assistant Commissioner of Police, Sam Karemera, the Commandant of the Canine Brigade under which the dogs are handled, the supplier of the dogs has been identified.

"We got someone who will supply us those dogs and very soon we shall acquire them,” Karemera said.
Once available, the dogs will be used for search and rescue, public order/patrol, cadaver search, banknote detector and identifying human scent.
Police also plans to have at least three dogs that snuffle drugs and explosives at 69 police stations across the country.
The 12 available dogs have so far assisted police in the apprehending of drug traffickers in Nyamirambo suburb. The dogs also helped Police discover 427 packets of cannabis in Musanze and Burera District and 4000 pellets of cannabis in Kimironko prison.
The police Dogs unity was created in the year 2000 with 2 dogs donated by the government of Austria, who also trained 02 dog handlers.
Police now has 12 trained dog handlers.
