The sixth edition of the Kigali International marathon will cost Sixty million francs (Frw60m) according to Florent Rwigema, a member of the event’s organizing committee
The organizers had originally set up a budget of Frw80m but that has been changed according to Rwigema.

"We have revised the budget because we were not sure that we would get this money. So far the Ministry of Sports has given us forty million (Frw40m) and we hope to raise the other 20 million from other sponsors,” Rwigema said.

Over 4000 athletes are expected to run in this year’s Kigali International Peace Marathon scheduled for 22nd – 23rd May.

Unlike in previous editions, this year’s half (21km) and full (42km) marathons will be preceded with a 5km Run for Fun race.

So far 40 athletes from over thirteen countries that include: Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Luxemboug, Italy, France, Australia have already registered.

The winner of the full marathon will get a cash prize of $2500, while the winner of the half marathon will get $1500.Last year, Kenya’s Tabut Benjamin Kipkosgei clocked 2 hours, 21 minutes and 38 seconds to win the full marathon while Bryton Banuelia of Tanzania set a new record in the women fray after clocking 2 hours, 47minutes and 49 seconds.
