US college to hold Genocide conference

US based Macalester College is planning a two-day conference to mark the 16th anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The conference which will run from April 19 to 20, 2010 will have “Genocide, Denial and Hope” as its theme.

US based Macalester College is planning a two-day conference to mark the 16th anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The conference which will run from April 19 to 20, 2010 will have "Genocide, Denial and Hope” as its theme.

According to Professor Jean-Pierre Karegeye, the conference will explore the history of Genocide in Rwanda, artistic responses, the Genocide denial phenomenon, strategies and obstacles to arrest Genocide planners in exile and subsequent progress and policy.

A multi-disciplinary roundtable will also discuss the possibilities and difficulties in preventing mass violence.
Professor Jean-Pierre Karegeye, who is the organizer of the conference, will be among several speakers on several topics in the conference.

Some of the speakers include Joelle Vitiello Associate Professor of French and Francophone Studies Macalester College, Gregory Gordon Assistant Professor of Law, Margee Ensign, Professor and Dean of the School of International Studies University of the Pacific, James D. Boys, Assistant Professor of International Political Studies at Richmond, the American International University and Susan Allen, Director of Rwanda/Zambia AITRP at the Emory University School of Medicine

This event is sponsored by Macalester College’s Departments of French and Francophone Studies, Anthropology, Theatre and Dance, the Mellon Curricular Pathways Grant at Macalester College, the University of the Pacific, the University of North Dakota’s Centre for Human Rights and Genocide Studies, the American International University in London, and Saint Cloud State University’s Centre for Holocaust and Genocide Education.
