NYANZA – Genocide survivors in Murinja cell, Kigoma sector, in Nyanza district have expressed their worries over threatening messages that have been dropped in the Cell by unidentified people.

The letters, found in Murinja Cell’s office during the mourning week were addressed to survivors warning them that they would be killed.

Jackson Habagusenga, an official from the Cell confirmed the incident and noted that the letters were found at the entry of his office. He said the incident has been reported to Police.

"These people want to take us back to the dark times, authorities should take these threats seriously and come up with measures to protect the people targeted,” said Liberata Mukabideri, a Genocide survivor living in Barankakara village.

Survivors attributed the threats to genocide ideology that is still rife in the area. They noted that other menacing acts like hurling stones on houses of survivors have been observed in the recent past.

"Unidentified people have been going around throwing stones at  our houses at night,” said Mukabideri. "Some are using other strange means like heavy flash lights at night to intimidate us.”

Patrick Kajyambere, the Executive Secretary of Kigoma Sector, declined to comment on the issue, saying he was not aware of the incident.

However, sources revealed that Sector officials and the representative of Genocide survivors in the Sector talked about the issue last Tuesday during the wrap up of the mourning week activities.

Other sources revealed that a security meeting to address residents of Murinja Cell on the issue had been scheduled for April 15, but the meeting was postponed.
