HUYE – Mwendo residents in Huye district have expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of basic infrastructure in the area.

Apart from a primary school, there are no other basic infrastructure in the area.
Residents decry the lack of a secondary school, a health facility apart from the fact that there is no market centre.

Residents say that they have to travel mostly on foot to Nyanza town (Nyanza district) or to Rwaniro to access health services, several kilometers away.

"It is a laborious task that we have to endure whenever we are in need of very basic services. For instance, when a woman is about to deliver, she is transported on a traditional stretcher to Rwaniro health centre. This is too challenging,” said Célestin Ahishakiye, a 63-year old man.

"When I plan to go to Nyanza market to sell off my food produce, I have to wake up as early at 3.00 am to get there at around 6.00 am. This really affects my life because I could use that time for other businesses,” said Jean de Dieu Havugimana of Cyarura village.

The Executive Secretary of Rwaniro sector, also a native of Mwendo cell, Jean Baptiste Mutabaruka, acknowledged the lack of basic infrastructure. He however, added that authorities are working on a plan to build a market and a health post in the cell.

"We are planning to start a basic health facility while still considering the possibility of building a proper health centre. There is also a plan to start a market for residents,” Mutabaruka said.
