Rwanda Governance Advisory Council (RGAC) together with the Ministry of Justice Thursday held a one-day meeting on Policy Dialogue on Legislative Reforms.

Justice Minister, Tharcisse Karugarama, who officially opened the meeting, called upon participants to always work closely with the government in strengthening and improving the country’s justice sector.

"As our partners in several areas of the justice sector, I urge you to always work closely with the government in various departments because true justice to every Rwandan is a right, not a privilege,” Karugarama said.

The Minister noted that 16 years after the Genocide, Rwanda has come a long way and has made remarkable progress in improving the justice sector, adding that 90 percent of Genocide cases have been completed.

Prof Anastase Shyaka, the Executive Secretary of RGAC, said that the main purpose of the event was to launch the RGAC policy dialogue programme.

He said that this programme will help to enhance good governance principles in the country giving an example of civil participation and embarking on public and private partnerships in policy formulation process.

Addressing participants, Denis Weller, USAID Mission Director, said that the Justice Strengthening Project seeks to assist government in developing the capacity of the country’s justice sector through aligning it with the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC).

Weller added that the project is designed to positively impact the three MCC indicators that include political rights, civil liberties and voice and accountability.
