Editor,

I want to send my condolences to the Chinese people who were victims of yesterday’s earthquake. This earthquake, which has cost at least 300 lives while injuring thousands, was a magnitude-6.9 and struck China’s Qinghai province.

This powerful tremor hit remote Yushu county, 800km south-west of the provincial capital Xining.

As a result most of the buildings in the worst-hit town of Jiegu were wrecked and landslides have cut off roads.

This isn’t the first time China has been hit by a devastating earthquake and I would like to send my condolences to those families that have lost their loved ones. May they rest in peace.
